Read I Thessalonians 5:19-22. As we try to be open to the Spirit of God speaking to us in words He directs (though not with the authority of the Bible itself), what two extremes must we guard against? Why would some despise a special word from the Spirit through another person (a prophecy)? Why would some be tempted to receive all such words without testing them against God’s authoritative revelation in the Bible? Do you think “open but cautious” captures the heart of what the apostle is teaching us?
